Books in Review: Please Sorry Thanks

I was excited to hear that Mark Batterson was releasing another book. However, I was admittedly surprised to discover what it was about. Having written dozens of books, many of which have multiple variations of the same core material, this book was one, at least at first glance, I don’t think I would have expected to have been written by him. However, once I got into the book, it was easy to see that this book was written in his style of speaking and challenging the reader that has become more familiar to me as I read more of his books. While it initially seemed strange, I found this book to be just as inspiring as his other titles that I have read, on a subject that is incredibly relevant to my life. It was also an honor to be a part of the launch team for this release. Whether this is your first Batterson book or your 12th, this book is one I definitely recommend ~ Bethel

In his book, Please Sorry Thanks, bestselling author Mark Batterson explains the life-giving and life-changing qualities of these words and the far-reaching implications of choosing to adapt them to our lives and relationships. Breaking down each of these words into three parts of the book, Batterson explores each of them in a way that connects with his readers. We learn in the “Psychology of Please” how our willingness to be polite and humble can open hearts, minds, and even opportunities. Through the “Science of Sorry”, we learn that willingly admitting when you do wrong or expressing compassion for someone who’s struggling can restore broken relationships. In the “Theology of Thanks”, we discover how learning to have a spirit of gratitude and thankfulness can change the way we see the people and world around us. Through all this, we are reminded that choosing to put the power of all three of these common words together can change our hearts and relationships more than we can imagine. Batterson does all of this in his unique style of writing, full of fun and relatable stories and illustrations, that makes you feel you are speaking with a friend. This book is a creative and inspiring approach to common words that we can tend to take for granted. It’s one that every Christian should read. Get your copy today!

* I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review

Picture
Singles-Friendly Rating. My only issue with the book is that some of the illustrations spoke strictly to marriage and/or families. While I was able to figure out ways to relate, I wish there were a few illustrations that also spoke to singles instead of just married people. There is also an illustration that mentioned testosterone in such a way that it was only speaking to men, but this reference was not clarified to be only for men reading the book. It was kind of confusing as a woman.
Picture
Personal Rating. Aside from these minor issues, this is a great book, as are all the books I’ve read from Mark Batterson so far. I look forward to reading more.

I have already read a handful of Mark Batterson’s books, so I heard about this one, I was excited. I even got onto the launch team for this book. Unfortunately, I was preoccupied during the launch campaign and forgot to pay attention to the release date. Eventually, the book completely left my mind, even as I had a copy sitting on my shelf. Then late this spring, I noticed a campaign his publisher was running to give anyone who had purchased the book a free autographed sticker to make their book an autographed copy. To my surprise, not only did I get the autographed sticker, but a few months later, I won a drawing to receive 8 more of his books for free! After this experience, I knew it was time I made time to read and review this book. In the end, I found that this book is definitely another win for Mark Batterson, especially for any of his readers that want to “win the day.” ~ Bethel

Many of us have dreams we want to pursue, but we don’t know where to start. We struggle with figuring out how to get where we want to be because we are stuck doing the same thing we have always done. We set goals only to see them fail. Even most New Year’s Resolutions fail before the end of the first month. As a result, so many of us are unable to live our lives to the fullest, since we are stuck in an endless cycle of dreams or goals that seem elusive to achieve. We often feel like failures, which leaves us feeling even more stuck than when we started. It makes us ask the question: is there a way to accomplish more so we can see our goals to their completion?
Picture
In his book, Win the Day, Mark Batterson helps you build or break the habits that are holding you back and achieve your God-sized goals, starting with asking a simple question: can you do it for a day? Seeing how many people fail at the goals there desire to achieve, Batterson shares seven creatively-titled habits to help us “win the day”. By “flipping the script”, we will change our perceptions of our life’s story that may be holding us back. Through “kissing the wave”, we learn to see the difficult parts of our past as the way to move forward. When we “eat the frog”, we choose to do the hard things and trust God to do what only He can do. If we “fly the kite”, we do little things as diligently as the big things. Choosing to “cut the rope” will allow you to avoid playing it safe and take calculated risks that can lead to the biggest rewards. “Winding the clock” is choosing to make the most of every minute and every moment. And “seeding the cloud” is taking actions today that will produce your desired outcomes in the future. All of these principles are shared in the context of powerful and sometimes humorous illustrations, either from history or from the author’s personal life. This book is powerful and relevant to practically any person who would read it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Get your copy today!

Books in Review: Draw the Circle

This book was an inspiring read. While I am not usually fond of devotionals and I struggle with getting through books about prayer, this book stands out from other books I’ve read in both of these categories. Aside from the crisis our world was facing when I first read it in spring of 2020, it was also a time I needed it in my personal life. It was also enjoyable to do this as part of a prayer experience led by the author Mark Batterson on social media, which meant that he published a video every day for 40 days, which was a great supplement to the material of the book. If you want to learn more about prayer or enjoyed Mark’s book The Circle Maker, this book is a must-read ~ Bethel

Picture
In Mark Batterson’s book, Draw the Circle, he expounds the principles he shared in The Circle Maker and turns them into a devotional prayer challenge over 40 days. Although he does challenge his readers to day consistently, this book doesn’t give specific challenges each day but instead allows the book to act as an inspiration to help you create your own pray strategies. Paired with personal testimony as well as stories from readers of his other books, Mark inspires his readers to think about prayer outside of the box and to allow our pursuit of God through prayer to give us the endurance to pray and wait “as long as it takes.” There is a lot of great truth and inspiring testimony packed into these 40 days. If you need to revitalize your prayer life or you are facing difficult circumstances that you want God to guide you through, this book would be a great tool to help you through whatever season you are currently facing. Get your copy today!

Personal Rating. This one gets 5’s all across this board. I liked it even more than The Circle Maker. One of the best devotional books I’ve read in a long time. I can’t recommend it enough!

Books in Review: Chase the Lion

Once I finished reading the book In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, I knew I had to read Chase the Lion. Since Mark Batterson wrote this book as a follow up and the first one spoke to me, I knew this one would too and I was right. I enjoy Mark’s writing style and relatability, as well as his passion to help his audience to live their best life. I also enjoyed hearing about the concept of “running toward the roar” from the perspective of pursuing dreams rather than just enduring pain (like in Levi Lusko’s book Through the Eyes of a Lion). This book is even more empowering and inspiring than the first and if you want to courage to pursue your dreams, this is a book I highly recommend ~ Bethel

Picture
Everyone has dreams we want to pursue, but many of us get scared and stop pursuing them before we even start. We are often so afraid of failing, we allow our fears to prevent us from pursuing our God-given dreams. We often make excuses to not pursuing them, but are evitable aware that our fears are parlaying us. It makes us ask the question: how do we overcome our fears to pursue our God-given dreams?

In his book Chase the Lion, Mark Batterson teaches us how to stop running away from dreams and opportunities that scare us and instead choose to run towards them. Once again using the story from Scripture about Benaiah defeating the lion in a pit on a snowy day with only a spear, Mark helps us to see that it’s only when we stop fearing failing that we can seize opportunities in their tracks, especially the types of dreams that would be impossible without God’s intervention. This engaging book will inspire anyone to take action that the dreams that have scared them for far too long. This is a book I highly recommend. Get your copy today!

Personal Rating. I love this book even more than In the Pit

Books in Review: In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day

From the moment heard about this book, I was intrigued by the title. This book has been on my review list for over a year now and on my “To Be Read” list for a few years, especially after I read The Circle Marker. When I finally did read it, I could not put it down. I felt like the author spoke my creative language. Mark has a way of inspiring his readers to a new perspective on the struggles of our lives, especially this book and its follow up book, Chase the Lion. For anyone that wants to learn how to face your fears and prepare yourself for the opportunities, this is definitely a book I recommend ~ Bethel

All of us face regrets for opportunities we missed. Whether by not recognizing an opportunity or by fear of failure, we often look back at opportunities we missed out on with regrets and fear that they will never come again. We want to better prepare ourselves for opportunities, especially when we know that God gave them to us, but we become afraid of our own dreams and ambitions, which starts the cycle all over again. It makes us ask the question: how do prepare ourselves to pursue and not run away from God-given opportunities?
Picture
In his book In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, Mark Batterson explores how to face our fears and failures so that we can be prepared to thrive when life gives the best opportunities. Mark shares the story of Benaiah in 2 Samuel 23, where he managed to kill a lion in a pit on a snowy day using only a spear as a weapon. Using this short story as his primary analogy, Mark explores we, like Benaiah, can face our fears and regrets so we can be ready to pursue God-ordained opportunities when they come. Using this obscure but powerful story as well as stories and illustrations from his own life, Mark empowers his audience to rise above missed opportunities from the past so they won’t miss what God may have in store from them in the future. Engaging from cover to cover, this is a book that I highly recommend to anyone that is looking to live a life that is ready to seize opportunities that comes their way.

Lion's Eyes Reviews is a blog dedicated to reviews to support the work of Christian and other quality authors. It will also feature the work Bethel does to help launch and promote the works of such authors, and some reviews of movies and musicals from a Christian perspective.

The name is derived from one of Bethel's favorite books, Through the Eyes of a Lion by Levi Lusko. Through these reviews, Bethel hope to give Christians the tools they need to look at the world "through the eyes of a lion" so they can find the courage to "run toward the roar".
